A clogged dishwasher soap dispenser is easily cleared if you follow logical troubleshooting steps. First, attempt to fix the dispenser without removing the door by checking the spring. Then, remove the door and replace the switch if necessary.

Tools and Materials Needed

* Replacement spring

* Replacement bimetallic switch

* Needle nose pliers

* Screwdriver

* Wire brush or pipe cleaner

Step 1 - Empty Dishwasher

Remove all the dishes in the dishwasher as well as the racks. An obstruction could have blocked the dispenser door from opening.

Step 2 - Clean Dispenser

Clean caked detergent from the inside of the dispenser and attempt to run the dishwasher again.

Step 3 - Check Spring

Remove the detergent dispenser lid with the screwdriver and examine the spring on the hinge. Obtain and install a replacement from the manufacturer if necessary.

Step 4 - Remove Door

Unscrew 6 to 8 fasteners around the perimeter of the dishwasher door and remove it from the dishwasher. Open it up and clean the dispenser from the inside and out. Inspect the bimetallic switch that controls the hinge by pushing it with a screwdriver until the door pops open. Realign the switch or replace it. If you replace it, mark the wires as you disconnect them. This will make wiring the new switch much easier.
